Boyle Announces $2 Million Federal Grant to Transform Reading Viaduct into Park and Pathway
PHILADELPHIA, PA — Today, Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02) announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a $2 million federal grant to the Center City District (CCD). This funding, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will be used to complete construction bid documents by April 2025 that will enable CCD to redevelop a portion of the old Reading Railroad Viaduct in Philadelphia, expanding on the first phase of The Rail Park, which was completed in 2018.
Congressman Boyle played a key role in securing this funding by advocating for the project and sending a letter of support to the Department of Transportation.
“All across America, old rail lines are being turned into vibrant public spaces that bring people together and breathe new life into neighborhoods,” said Congressman Boyle. “Thanks to this $2 million federal grant that I strongly supported, we’ll be continuing the transformation of the Reading Viaduct into a beautiful park and trail system. This project will connect neighborhoods, improve access to key destinations, and give residents more green spaces to enjoy.”
The project will improve access to schools, health care, and local businesses, while also promoting walking and biking as healthier, greener ways to get around. The new phase of the restored viaduct will reconnect neighborhoods divided by the old, crumbling railway and bring much needed change to the area.
This grant from the Department of Transportation was funded through the Reconnecting Communities Program, established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The Reconnecting Communities Program aims to revitalize areas that have been harmed by past transportation decisions that divided communities, paved over once-thriving neighborhoods, and limited economic opportunity.
