Boyle Applauds Butch Lewis Act That Would Save Pensions of More Than 1 Million Workers and Retirees

July 24, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02) this evening released the following statement after House passage of The Butch Lewis Act (H.R. 397):

"Today, we took a major step in defending the financial security and futures of 1 million+ workers and retirees", said Congressman Boyle. "This evening, Democrats passed the bipartisan Butch Lewis Act, which protects the hard-earned retirement benefits of workers and retirees participating in multiemployer plans."

"Truck drivers, coal miners, bakers and millions of other workers paid into these multiemployer plans with hard-earned dollars and delayed immediate financial gain for the promise of a safe and secure retirement for themselves and their families. But the 2008 financial crash dealt these retirement plans a devastating financial blow and deregulation killed union jobs in many of the industries that multiemployer plans support."

"As a result, many of these multiemployer pension plans are in jeopardy – and more than 1.3 million workers and retirees are in danger of losing their pension through no fault of their own. We must do right by America's workers and Senator McConnell must immediately take it up and the President must sign it!"
