BOYLE, AUCHINCLOSS INTRODUCE LUNG CANCER AWARENESS MONTH RESOLUTION

November 15, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Reps. Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02) and Jake Auchincloss (MA-04) introduced a resolution to recognize November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month and to bring awareness to the importance of early detection and treatment of lung cancer.

“The annual November observance of Lung Cancer Awareness Month aims to increase the public’s awareness about lung cancer, its risk factors, and the importance of early detection”, said Boyle. “Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death among individuals in the United States, accounting for more deaths than breast cancer, prostate cancer, and melanoma cancer combined. By reaffirming our collective commitment to education and advocacy, we can work together to reduce the impact of lung cancer and strive towards a healthier, more informed society.”

With the rate of lung cancer diagnosis increasing, screenings should be as well. Instead, we've seen a decrease in screenings and a lack of education about the causes of lung cancer”, said Auchincloss. “As someone who represents Massachusetts - home to world-class lung cancer treatment and research - I am proud to lead this resolution, which is a critical step in increasing awareness of the causes of lung cancer and encouraging screenings nationwide.”

Close to 238,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year. And while the survival rate for lung cancer is rising — particularly in people of color, as reported this month by the American Lung Association — improvements in treatment and care access are not translating to gains in lung cancer screening and early detection.
