Boyle Statement on Situation in Venezuela

April 30, 2019
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC– Today, Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02) released the following statement regarding the current situation in Venezuela:

“I am watching events in Venezuela very closely and continue to stand with the people of Venezuela in their pursuit for freedom and democracy. The Venezuelan people have had enough of Maduro’s power grabs and are demanding that democracy be returned to them.

Since Maduro seized power, conditions in Venezuela have grown sharply worse. Authorities have closed off virtually all channels for political dissent, restrict civil liberties and prosecute perceived opponents without regard for due process. Maduro has only continued his brazen crackdown on Venezuelans, using arrests, torture, and temporary disappearances to quash dissent. Venezuela’s severe economic crisis has left millions struggling to meet basic needs, and driven mass emigration – destabilizing the region.

I will continue to stand by a civilian-led peaceful transition and urge the administration to provide temporary protected status to Venezuelans who need it in light of the crisis.”
