BOYLE VOTES TO ENSHRINE MARRIAGE EQUALITY UNDER FEDERAL LAW

December 8, 2022

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, amid extreme MAGA Republicans’ continued threats to Pennsylvanians' personal freedoms, Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02) voted for passage of the Respect for Marriage Act. This landmark legislation takes several key steps to defend marriage equality: it enshrines the marriage equality for same sex and interracial couples guaranteed by Obergefell and Loving for the purposes of federal law, repeals the discriminatory and unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), and provide additional legal protections for marriage equality.

Congressman Boyle released the following statement after today’s passage of this historic legislation:

“The Respect for Marriage Act is an historic step forward in the fight to honor the dignity and equality of every American, and every couple. I was proud to help pass this historic legislation today. By passing the Respect for Marriage Act, we will ensure that all Americans continue to be afforded the same rights by the government no matter what the Supreme Court may decide in the future. Today’s passage comes as extreme MAGA Republicans continue their assault on personal liberties across this nation. I will continue fighting to honor the dignity and equality of every American. Hate and bigotry have no place in America.”
