Congressman Boyle, Kinzinger Re-Introduce Legislation To Condemn Syrian Hospital Attacks

Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02) and Rep. Adam Kinzinger (IL-16), co-chairs of the Friends of a Free, Stable and Democratic Syria Caucus, re-introduced a resolution, H.Res.395, condemning the intentional military targeting of hospitals and medical personnel in Syria. This month, a dramatic escalation in attacks by the Assad regime in Northwestern Syria created a highly unstable situation. More than a dozen health care facilities have reportedly been attacked.

“The spike in attacks on medical facilities in Northwestern Syria is not a new tactic by the Assad regime.” said Congressman Boyle. “This is a continuation of a strategy used by the regime and Russian government over the past 8 years to force these Syrians to leave the country. This disturbing and blatant violation of international law must end. The United States must send a clear message to Assad and Putin that the international community is watching, and we will hold them accountable for the intentional targeting of vulnerable civilians and those helping the sick and wounded.”

“The intentional targeting of hospitals, schools, and civilians is pure evil, and it must stop. Despite a ceasefire-pact from Russia in July 2017, Syria’s main military ally has continued to carry out attacks on behalf of the Assad regime, aiding in his horrific genocide,” said Congressman Kinzinger. “Over the last few weeks, we have seen a dramatic escalation of these attacks. Our resolution calls for action to investigate these heinous crimes against humanity and violations of international law. We must stand with the Syrian people suffering under the barbaric reign of Assad and his cronies in Russia and Iran. We must stop this offensive, and we must hold these war criminals accountable.”

H.Res.395 condemns these attacks, calls on all parties to end the airstrikes, and asks the Secretary of State to work with the international community to conduct investigations into these violations of international humanitarian law. According to Physicians for Human Rights, 90% of these attacks have been carried out by the Assad regime and the Russian military.
