Congressman Boyle & Kinzinger Urge Trump Administration Address Attacks in Northwest Syria

May 16, 2019
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02) and Congressman Adam Kinzinger (IL-16) led a group of 32 Members of Congress in a letter to President Trump urging immediate action to preserve the cease-fire in Northwest Syria. Over the past three weeks, the Assad regime’s attacks on innocent civilians have escalated, furthering the humanitarian crisis plaguing Syria today.

Following the delivery of their letter to the White House, Congressmen Boyle and Kinzinger, co-founders and chairs of the Friends of a Free, Stable and Democratic Syria Caucus, released the following statements:

“Assad and his cronies’ vicious attacks on Syrian hospitals and innocent civilians create nothing short of a humanitarian catastrophe”, said Congressman Boyle. “The bombings in recent weeks have displaced nearly a quarter million people and threaten the lives of many others, adding to the 5.6 million refugees left in the wreckage of Assad’s warpath. The United States must lead so Northwest Syria can return to a cease-fire. The United States cannot sit idly by as Assad slaughters his own citizens and commits further violations of international law. My colleagues in Congress and I will continue to monitor developments in Syria. “

“Time and again, we have watched as the Assad regime targets innocent civilians in their quest for control. Assad and his cronies in Russia and Iran have committed a horrific genocide in Syria, and while they’ve been warned, the attacks on hospitals, markets, school, and homes continue, and as such, the death toll in Syria continues to rise,” said Congressman Kinzinger. “The current situation in Idlib is dire, and the offensive underway must be stopped. Our letter today urges the President to act before it’s too late—for our own national interests and for the humanitarian crisis in Syria.”

The Congressmen were pleased to have the support of their fellow House Foreign Affairs Committee colleagues, Chairman Eliot Engel (D-NY) and Ranking Member Michael McCaul (R-TX).

“The humanitarian crisis in Syria demands our full attention. We need to demonstrate American leadership in pushing for a full cease-fire, and moving toward a solution for the millions of civilians in Assad’s crosshairs,” said House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Eliot Engel. “I’m proud to join this bipartisan group of members in urging the Administration to prioritize this issue.  On the Foreign Affairs Committee, I’ll continue working to hold Assad accountable for his war crimes, and to provide United States support for the millions of innocent victims.”
“Putin’s and Assad’s brutal assault on civilians in Syria must end now. The death toll continues to rise with each passing day, and it’s time for the world to act,” said House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican McCaul. “The Trump Administration has used its leverage to prevent such attacks in the past and I urge them to use their influence again to protect innocent children and people in Syria.”
