CONGRESSMAN BOYLE STATEMENT ON PAYCHECK FAIRNESS ACT PASSAGE

April 15, 2021

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Brendan Boyle (PA-02) released the following statement this evening upon passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act. It is legislation which will secure equal pay for equal work, and bring our nation closer to its founding promise of fairness and equality. Boyle is an original cosponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act.

"It has been nearly sixty years since the passage of the Equal Pay Act, yet far too many women in America still face the profound injustice and insult of pay disparity," said Congressman Boyle. "Equal pay for equal work should be a priority for everyone, regardless of gender. Unequal pay is not just a problem for women, it's also a problem for families, who are trying to pay their bills, trying to get ahead, trying to achieve the American Dream, and are getting a smaller paycheck than they have earned for their hard work."

Women working full-time, year-round are paid only 82 cents for every dollar paid for men. For women of color, the disparity is worse: with Black women making 63 cents compared to white non-Hispanic men, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, American Indian and Alaska Native women making 60 cents and Latinas making just 55 cents. This pay gap can add up to more than $400,000 in lost wages over a career.
