Congressman Boyle Statement on Potential Cancer Link in Philadelphia Public Schools
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02) released the following statement in response to the potential link of cancer and asbestos in public schools in Philadelphia after a teacher was diagnosed with mesothelioma.
"It is deeply troubling to hear that a longtime Philadelphia school teacher’s mesothelioma could have been contracted from her time teaching in a classroom. Our schools should be a sanctuary for all in our community - not a deadly health hazard. It is unconscionable that the students, teachers and staff members of the Philadelphia School District have to worry about asbestos threatening their health during their time at school. I stand in full support PFT President Jerry Jordan's call for immediate remediation in Philadelphia public schools."
In 2018, Congressman Boyle, joined by Members representing Philadelphia, wrote a letter to leaders of the U.S. House of Representatives to demand federal funding for improved public school conditions, including the removal of known asbestos.
