REPS. BOYLE AND KINZINGER CALL UPON U.N. AMBASSADOR TO CONDEMN SYRIAN PRESIDENT ASSAD

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Brendan Boyle (D-PA) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), Co-Chairs of the Friends of a Free, Stable, and Democratic Syria Caucus, sent a letter calling on U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield to condemn the Assad regime's massacre of innocent Syrian civilians in the town of Daraa al-Balad. In late June, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces began to attack Daraa, ending the 2018 Russian orchestrated ceasefire. That besiegement has now given way to a violent onslaught against civilians that has resulted in hundreds of casualties and has left more than 55,000 residents without food, medicine, and basic necessities.

"I am horrified by the atrocities continuing to take place in Daraa, where dozens of women and children have been murdered by Assad's forces over the last several weeks", said Congressman Boyle. "It is imperative that the United Nations Security Council immediately convene to discuss a nationwide ceasefire. The international community cannot sit idly by as this senseless and tragic violence persists."

In their letter, Reps. Boyle and Kinzinger called upon Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield to urge swift action by the United Nations Security Council to hold an emergency briefing on Daraa and to immediately bring forward a resolution condemning President Assad and others. The Congressmen affirmed their solidarity with Secretary of State Antony Blinken in condemning the regime's brutal assault on Daraa, calling for an immediate end to the violence, and reiterating calls for a nationwide ceasefire in line with UNSCR 2254.
